GDI Hub Recognised by Karnali Province Minister for Advancing Assistive Technology Services in Nepal
The Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub) has received thanks from the Honourable Minister for Social Development of Karnali Province for its contribution to improving access to assistive technology (AT) for persons with disabilities in Nepal.
In partnership with UNICEF Nepal, UGANI Foundation, and in coordination with the Department of Health Services: Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, GDI Hub supported the Centre for Disabled Children Assistance (CDCA) to implement the project: "Establish and Strengthen 3D Printed Orthotics and Prosthetics Centre to Enable Improved Participation of Children with Disabilities, Preferably from Disaster Areas in Nepal."
The initiative established two 3D printing laboratories, one in Kathmandu and another at INF Shining Hospital in Surkhet, Karnali Province, whcih are both now fully operational. These centres have provided 75 custom-made assistive devices to 67 users to date, including individuals affected by the recent earthquakes in Jajarkot and Rukum.
Among the many lives impacted is that of Aakash, a young man from a remote village in Nepal who lost his leg after an accident in childhood. With limited access to prosthetic services in his area, Aakash lived with restricted mobility for years. Through the project, he received a custom 3D-printed prosthesis and participated in clinical assessments and rehabilitation training. His journey, marked by renewed confidence, independence, and aspirations, demonstrates the life-changing potential of inclusive technology. “Now, I can walk to school and even play with my friends. I feel like I’ve got my life back,” Aakash shared.
Another key element of the project was the training of 16 prosthetists and orthotists in digital prosthetics technology, enabling them to design and produce custom prosthetic devices using 3D printing. This training builds sustainable local capacity, allowing health professionals in Nepal to provide high-quality, affordable care and adapt to evolving technology, ensuring long-term support for people with disabilities across the country.
We thank the Honourable Minister for Social Development of Karnali Province for this recognition, which highlights the shared commitment between the government and development partners to advancing inclusive, technology-driven rehabilitation services in Nepal.
GDI Hub remains dedicated to working with stakeholders to scale access to assistive technology and support a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
