In 2016, the UCL Grand Challenge awarded the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub) an initial grant of £10,000. With this, we set out to address some of the most pressing challenges facing people with disabilities worldwide.

But fast-forward to today, and we’re proud to operate in 41 countries, collaborate with over 100 partners, and positively impact the lives of more than 35 million people.

The Grand Challenge’s funding was more than just financial support; it catalysed turning our ideas into action. This has enabled the GDI Hub to drive meaningful change through the development of new technologies, shape systems for improved access to assistive technology, and launch programs like GDI Accelerate to support startups in the assistive tech sector. These initiatives continue to have a global impact, helping to ensure that people with disabilities have the tools and opportunities they need to thrive.

At GDI Hub, we are grateful for the UCL Grand Challenges initiative’s pivotal role in our journey. It demonstrated the power of collaboration and funding in creating lasting change, and we look forward to continuing our work to build a more inclusive, accessible world for all.
