About

Assistive technology (AT) aims to improve the independence and well-being of individuals with disabilities. Despite rapid innovation, there remains a significant gap in awareness and access to AT products. Our project, that word-of-mouth and peer networks are key sources of information, and that challenges persist in accessing products and funding. To address this, we created a global map of AT start-ups to improve awareness and facilitate access.

Highlights

Overall, we found that there is still a substantial knowledge gap in assistive products, how to access products, and funding for needed products.

  • Global AT Start-up Database: Over 400 AT start-ups across six regions were identified and categorised.
  • Interactive Map Design: User-friendly interfaces were developed to connect AT start-ups with key stakeholders like users, policymakers, and investors.
  • Promoting Collaboration: The map facilitates knowledge sharing and partnerships within the AT ecosystem.

This project tackles the significant issue of awareness and accessibility of assistive products, ensuring that users and stakeholders are better informed about existing solutions and how to access them.

Conclusion

The AT Innovator’s Map will serve as a centralised, interactive platform to increase the visibility of AT start-ups and foster collaboration across the global ecosystem. By providing key information on AT products, funding opportunities, and industry connections, the map will reduce barriers to access and knowledge, ultimately promoting inclusivity and improving the lives of individuals with disabilities.
