Storytelling for Assistive Technology Advocacy
This case study shares insights from a series of storytelling workshops conducted in Kenya and Pakistan as part of the AT2030 programme. The workshops were designed to empower people with visual and hearing impairments to become effective advocates for assistive technology (AT) and disability rights.
Through participatory and multisensory activities, participants could reflect on their lived experiences, define clear advocacy goals, and craft personal stories to amplify their voices and drive meaningful change. The workshops embraced diverse abilities and engaged participants with tools such as modelling clay, Lego blocks, and 3D miniatures to make advocacy accessible to all.
Key Activities Included:
- Reflective Storytelling: Participants used the Reflective Experience Framework to explore their lived experiences, revealing critical insights into their challenges.
- Strategic Planning: Using the Advocacy Canvas, participants outlined advocacy goals, identified key stakeholders, and mapped out actionable steps for social change.
- Creative Story Development: Through narrative techniques and tactile materials, participants created compelling advocacy artefacts that told their stories in powerful, tangible ways.
- Story Sharing & Peer Learning: This activity encouraged participants to share their stories, building confidence, refining their messages, and fostering a sense of collective action.
- Reflection Sessions: Designed to promote deep learning and emotional processing, these sessions helped participants plan for their future advocacy work.
The stories shared during the workshops revealed significant challenges faced by persons with disabilities, including:
- Inaccessible built environments and public infrastructure
- Gender-based violence, particularly against Deaf women and girls
- Disability stigma and negative public attitudes
- Barriers to inclusive healthcare, including a lack of sign language interpretation
- Social exclusion and limitations on personal freedom
Participants underscored the crucial role of assistive technologies in enhancing independence, improving access to services, and preserving dignity. They also advocated for universal design, stronger legal protections, and public education to combat stigma and foster inclusion.
