This report presents findings from a survey conducted by Shujaaz Inc., under the AT2030 initiative led by the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub). The study aimed to understand the awareness, attitudes, and participation of 18–24-year-old Kenyans regarding disability, disability sports, and assistive technology.
Findings
- Engagement with International Events: 47% of respondents followed the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, while 23% followed the Paralympic Games.
- General Disability Awareness: 11% of contributors self-identify as disabled. Additionally, 16% have a disabled family member, 41% have a disabled friend, and 33% have a disabled person attending their school.
- Observations of Disability Sports: 45% have seen a disabled person participating in sports within their community.
- Assistive Technology Usage: 42% report using some form of assistive technology themselves.
- Inclusive Attitudes: A significant 96% responded positively to the idea of having a disabled teammate, opponent, or coach.
These findings highlight a generally positive attitude among Kenyan youth towards disability sports. The next steps involve leveraging these insights to promote greater inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in sports.
